Shehrbano Saiyid
Shehrbano Saiyid graduated from the Lahore University of Management Sciences in Pakistan in 2005. Her interest in the mountain regions in her country led her to live in Skardu, a town popular for its relatively close proximity to the second-highest mountain in the world, K2. There she worked in rural development for the Aga Khan Foundation.
Her real interest, however, lay in documentary filmmaking. So she returned to her hometown, Karachi, and worked as a features reporter for Geo News, a national television channel. She reported and produced reports on a number of issues, such as rape, mental health, women’s legal rights and the increasing use of the veil in the city, to name a few. She also filmed and produced an independent short adventure documentary on traversing three glaciers and a mountain pass.
Saiyid is now a student at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism on a Fulbright Scholarship and hopes to use the training she receives this year to pursue a career as a documentary filmmaker.
