Amikka Smith

Amikka Smith was born in Detroit, Mich., and has three siblings. Known by her family as the talkative child, she took an interest in communications as she matriculated through grade school and high school. She attended Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C., majoring in mass communications. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in May 2009 and wanted to further her education in journalism. She now attends graduate school at Columbia University, pursuing a Master of Science degree in Journalism. Upon graduation, Amikka plans to become a community affairs correspondent reporting on issues concerning alcoholism, drug and substance abuse, education, poverty and health care in urban communities. She plans to use her voice to advocate for underrepresented minorities.
