Police investigate body parts found off Harlem River Drive
Remains of a human body were found on the east side of Washington Heights this morning, off of 167th Street, according to police reports. The department issued this statement:
“On Tuesday, 12/15/09, at 0943 hours, police responded to a 911 call of a possible DOA in an grassy area off the southbound Harlem River Drive at W 167 Street, located within the confines of the 33 Precinct. Upon arrival police discovered the decomposed partial remains of a human body (unknown age/sex/identity). The Medical Examiner is to determine the identity and cause of death. The investigation is ongoing.”

UPDATED 3:15 PM: ABC Eyewitness News is reporting that the remains were found in a wooded area of Highbridge Park, close to Harlem River Drive. According to ABC, police said a head and a torso were found, but it is not clear if the parts belong to the same person.
UPDATED 5:20 PM: According to DNAinfo, the police and the medical examiner’s team searched the area where the remains were found during most of the day. A pair of shoes and jeans were spotted close to where the body was discovered. Investigators have yet to determine the identity or even the gender of the body parts.
