Court Annuls Columbia’s Manhattanville Expansion Plans

by Mary Plummer on 12/03/2009

A state court ruled against Columbia University’s effort to use eminent domain to develop 17 acres in Manhattanville today. The move was an unexpected blow to the university’s plans to build a $6.3 billion satellite campus, but a win for local business owners fighting to stay in the neighborhood.

The 3-2 decision from the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court deemed Columbia’s efforts to takeover the properties unconstitutional, annulling the state’s 2008 decision.
